AEPC Chairman Dr A. Sakthivel Welcomes India–US Trade Breakthrough, Sees Export and Job Growth

AEPC Chairman Dr A. Sakthivel Welcomes India–US Trade

Welcoming the breakthrough in India–US trade negotiations, Dr A. Sakthivel, Chairman of AEPC, said the development comes at a crucial time for the Indian apparel industry, which has been under significant pressure due to the steep 50 per cent tariff imposed by the United States.

Describing the agreement as both timely and strategic, Dr Sakthivel noted that the United States remains India’s single largest export market for apparel. Improved trade terms, he said, will significantly enhance the price competitiveness of Indian apparel products in the US market and help exporters regain momentum amid challenging global conditions.

According to the AEPC Chairman, the breakthrough is expected to provide a strong boost to apparel exports and stimulate fresh investments across the entire value chain, from fibre and fabric to garmenting and value-added manufacturing. He emphasised that strengthened trade engagement with the US will further reinforce India’s standing as a reliable and trusted global sourcing hub.

Dr Sakthivel also highlighted the broader socio-economic impact of the development, particularly in terms of employment. The apparel sector is among India’s largest employment generators, with a high concentration of women workers and labour-intensive operations. The improved trade environment, he said, will not only help safeguard existing jobs but also create substantial new employment opportunities, supporting inclusive growth and livelihood security.

AEPC believes that a stronger and more balanced India–US trade relationship will open new avenues for sustainable growth and long-term partnership, delivering mutual benefits to both economies. The agreement, Dr Sakthivel added, aligns well with India’s long-term vision of expanding its global footprint in apparel and textiles while strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Expressing his appreciation for the efforts behind the breakthrough, Dr Sakthivel said he was thankful to the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Commerce and Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal for their sustained and focused engagement in advancing India’s trade interests.
