The Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) has announced the 2024/2025 theme for its International Design Competition: “Colour For Good – Creativity in Adversity.” This prestigious annual event invites undergraduate and graduate students from SDC member colleges to showcase their creativity, vision, and innovative solutions to contemporary challenges in the textile industry.
This year’s theme places a spotlight on sustainability, challenging participants to explore the profound connection between color and its role in addressing environmental and social issues. Aspiring designers are encouraged to push boundaries, using the science and art of color to present solutions that inspire resilience and hope amid adversity.
Through this competition, students gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the global textile supply chain. Guided by their tutors, participants create designs that are both visually striking and environmentally conscious. Entries will be judged on innovative use of color, sustainable materials, and adherence to eco-friendly principles.
Winners of national heats will compete in the global grand final in late 2025, with the ultimate champion receiving a trophy and a prize of £1,000. International media coverage ensures that the competition serves as a springboard for young talents, helping them gain recognition in the fashion and textile industries.
Clare Moore, SDC’s Membership Manager, shared her enthusiasm:
“We’re thrilled to see how students interpret this year’s theme. Last year’s entries were exceptional, and we anticipate even greater creativity this year. By encouraging students to consider the environmental and social impact of color, we hope to inspire a new wave of sustainable design.”
The competition is open to students currently enrolled at SDC member colleges. For more information or to express interest, email members@sdc.org.uk.
